Bespoked and Beyond

Kicking off with some big plans for 2016……..

IMG_6898

So already two weeks into 2016 and so many plans for the rest of the year. Let’s start with one of the biggest events in the Calendar for Moss Bikes, that’s of course Bespoked, the handmade bike show in Bristol in April. Similar to last year Moss will have one of the largest stands at the show featuring our best bikes as well as showcasing our school partnership to teach bicycle design and frame building as part of the L!FE Bikes GCSE Product Design course based at Adams’ Grammar School in Shropshire. We have even made the front cover of Urban Cyclist Magazine this issue! In fact there is a superb seven page article about the L!FE Bikes inside written by Anna Glowinski.

Best Track Bike

Last year at Bespoked Moss Bikes won Best Track Bike with the Gnaphosa. The design brief for the Gnaphosa was to design a track bike using conventional lugs and Reynolds 853 Steel. The components would be a selection of Britain’s finest from Goldtec, Middleburn and Hope. Plain stealth carbon rims and Fizik unusual Volta R1 saddle. The bike is named after the  Gnaphosa nigirrima a unique black spider that only lives in Wybunbury Moss a few 100m from the Moss Bikes Workshop. It’s stealthy and hunts and night, a perfect name for a track league warrior.  Being so involved in the L!FE Bikes project leading up to Bespoked not all of the Moss Bikes show bikes got finished. I put the Gnaphosa on the stand as an interesting bike but not planning to win anything. So as you can imagine what a thrill it was to win Best Track Bike competing against the world’s best handmade bicycles!

Moss Idris

January in the workshop so far has been about cleaning and detailing Robin’s Moss Bikes Idris frame. A traditional 853 road frame with hooded dropouts. I’m very pleased with how this bike has cleaned up after brazing and the frame is so close to its first coat of paint. The paint design is a little different from previous Moss Bikes with the head tube and seat tube paint in the same colour as the graphics. The Moss brake bridge signature location for the bike name is also different as it is the same as the main Moss script. Robin will soon have a beautiful steel road bike designed for Audax. Getting super focused on the details below. It’s really satisfying when you get tight shore lines around the lugs.

Cycling Weekly Competition

Back in March 2015. A Moss Bikes competition was announced in partnership with Cycling Weekly Magazine and the organisers of Etape Caledonia. The competition was featured in Cycling Weekly Magazine to win a custom Moss Bike based on the Moss Davies. Mark won the competition and we worked together to design his winning bike. The design work has been done and the frame build will start straight after the completion of the Moss Idris.

Ride it to Bespoked

So here’s a crazy plan…..design and build two custom stainless steel adventure bikes for two ‘happy go lucky’ mountain bikers Kev and Alex to ride off-road from Stoke-on-Trent to Bristol. In fact their riding straight to Bespoked, the handmade bike show with their new bikes to be featured mud-and-all on the Moss Bikes stand. Follow the build and the adventure as it happens here. By the way, Kev and Alex are also opening a brand new bike shop called Spokes. We’ll be following that story too!

2014 Review Part 1

What a Year!

Lets start with ….. December 2013

I thought now would be good time to review 2014. Things actually started getting really exciting this time last year, December 2013 when The Davies went front cover of Urban Cyclist Magazine. Like now the weather was cold and miserable but this surprise really warmed our hearts and set us up for what was going to be a very busy year!

The initial review was fantastic!

Urban Cyclist really got what this bike was about and captured the detail perfectly.
