Lets talk Schlumpf!

Close to the home of Moss Bikes there is a hill called Mow Cop. A favourite for Autumn adventures if you like mixing the Cheshire plains with a few interesting lumps out and about.  From Astbury near Congleton the climb to the top is very pleasant (if you like climbs!). It’s a mixture of steady slopes and the odd ramp to sprint up to the top where you will find the Folly, Mow Cop Castle. There is a more direct way – The Killer Mile. Famous for running up and more recently cycling up during the Cheshire Cat Sportive the Killer Mile is a nice little test of your early/late season fitness. The last section on Top Station Road is a standing-only slog to the summit. Actually the top is a little further-on on Castle Road and when doing the Cheshire Cat Sportive for the first time no-one ever bothers to tell you the slope down is not quite where you’re hoping it will be!

If you could choose any bike for this classic Mow Cop Killer what would it be? This is my answer – The Moss Montopoli.

So why is this bike so special? Well apart from the timeless looks, Reynolds 725 tubing and Wound Up forks there is a very funky gear system hidden away. The Moss Montopoli is a two speed fixed gear road bike. Oh yes, but how? Well checkout the chainset. It’s a Schlumpf  Mountain Drive – it’s a chainset with a built-in planetary gearbox. In normal use the chainset offers a normal 1:1 drive. Press the chrome button with your heal in the middle of the chainset where the crank bolt cap should be. What happens next (immediately) feels like magic. The ratio drops 2.5 times and the cranks move at a different speed to the chainrings. The Moss Montopli can now climb walls, like our cat the bike is named after. Imagine passing a Dogma 10 with ease on 25% ramp on machine that looks like an old school track bike in full-on Chris Froome style – Such fun! …..I’ve done it.

Want to know more about the Schlumpf Mountain Drive? or maybe about those wonderful  Wound Up Carbon Forks?

The Rolling Stone

Perfectly fit for purpose on British roads the Rolling Stone will brighten up your commute or set you up for the biggest of life’s adventures. Without doubt this is one of the most capable bikes carrying the award winning MOSS name. Individually selected Reynolds 853 tubes meticulously filleted and shaped by hand are joined combining angles to give the frame the ‘sweetspot’ of dynamic but stable riding over a range of conditions and surfaces.

As ever the best of British parts are used where possible and in this case I have really gone to town with the increasing range of Hope components including wheels, headset and the Barnoldswick manufactured carbon seat post.

Campagnolo provides the gear system and the Potenza group seamlessly integrates function and aesthetics. I am also pleased to offer this bike with a Middleburn 11s chainset, tough enough to hit the alternative route home.

Stopping power and the way you control it is a critical factor on any bike. With the Rolling Stone the tried and testing TRP Spyre brakes are fitted to the exquisite paragon dropouts at the rear featuring direct mount for the disc calipers. This gives the frame the cleanest of looks in the brake department and functions effortlessly. Excellent brake modulation is matched with the superb 30c Challenge Strada Bianca tyres. Road.cc claim these tyres are “A brilliant all-rounder that’s fast enough for nearly any road use, but with hugely improved comfort”

Every decision on this bike has been a long one to cater for the huge possibilities it presents. Everything from the 44id headtube to the choice of QR dropouts over through axle has been deliberated over to maximise the experience of function, maintenance and durability for a ride 4 miles or a trans-global adventure of 4000 miles. For every road and highway and byway the Rolling Stone is the one.
